Omen on Ascent

Omen is Ascent's default controller because his two free-recharging Dark Cover orbs can be placed from anywhere on the map — you can smoke A Rafters and A Wine for a site hit while your body is still holding Mid Cubby — and because Paranoia passes through Ascent's thick brick walls, which is exactly what a map built out of long, hard-angle chokes (A Main, B Main, Mid Top) is weakest to. The trade-off after recent patch changes is that his kit is slower and less forgiving than it was: Paranoia has a windup and a trimmed sphere of influence, Dark Cover's recharge has crept upward, and since smokes settle to nearby ground height, you no longer manufacture one-ways with orb placement — so every smoke has to be planned a beat earlier and spent on purpose.

The A execute: two smokes, one Paranoia, and the Mid Link problem

Ascent's A site needs three things blocked — A Rafters, A Wine, and Mid Link — and you only have two orbs. Solve it by making Mid Link a body problem, not a smoke problem: one teammate holds Mid Catwalk or Mid Cubby so rotators through Mid Link get shot instead of smoked. That frees both Dark Covers for A Rafters and A Wine, the two angles that kill entries through A Main. Place them from inside A Main before the execute, not from A Lobby — smoke travel is slow enough now that orbs thrown from Lobby land while your team is already exposed at the A Main mouth. Paranoia is what actually opens the door. Hug the left wall of A Main and fire it straight through into A Site: it passes through the brick and nearsights the default holder near the boxes and anyone peeking A Window. Fire it, then let the entry go — Paranoia in front of your own entry is a positioning error, not a coordination flex; you want the blind landing on defenders while the entry is already moving. Hold the second Dark Cover if it's recharged for the post-plant instead of re-smoking A Rafters at 0:40 with nobody on site.

A execute: smokes on A Rafters and A Wine, Paranoia fired through the A Main wall, entry along A Lobby → A Main → A Site.

  • 1Entry path — smoke from inside A Main, not A Lobby
  • 2Dark Cover #1
  • 3Dark Cover #2
  • 4Cover with a body from Mid Catwalk, not a third smoke

Mid Catwalk first, B second: the execute that doesn't need four smokes

Hitting B Main into a set defense with two orbs is a losing proposition — B Site is enclosed and the defenders have B Boat House, Mid Link, and the back of site to work with. The version that works is Mid first. Smoke Mid Top from Mid Bottom, let your team take Mid Catwalk and Mid Cubby, and now the B hit comes from two directions at once: B Main and Mid Link. That halves the number of angles you need to blind — usually just B Boat House and the back of B Site toward Defender Side Spawn. Shrouded Step earns its keep here. Ascent's B choke is the most reliably trip-wired spot on the map; step past the B Main doorway line rather than shooting a Cypher trip and announcing the push. The channel is audible and you're briefly visible, so step from behind cover to behind cover, never into open B Site. Paranoia through the B Main wall into B Site catches the Boat House-adjacent holder who thinks the wall protects him. Note the reduced radius from recent patches: you now have to be in the right lane, not just roughly aimed at the site — go into a custom and re-check the spot you learned two acts ago, because it may only clip the edge now.

Mid-first B take: control Mid Catwalk, then hit B Site from B Main and Mid Link simultaneously.

  • 1Mid control route into B
  • 2Second entry lane — Shrouded Step past the trip line
  • 3Dark Cover — the angle that kills B Main entries
  • 4Smoke to win Mid Catwalk first

Defending A: spend one smoke, bank one for the retake

The most common Omen defense error on Ascent is dumping both orbs into A Main at 1:30 and then retaking A Site at 0:25 with nothing but a rifle. Hold one. The delay smoke — deep in A Main, so attackers must walk through it and lose their A Window and A Rafters sightlines — is worth spending because it buys rotation time from B Lobby or Mid Market. The second orb is worth far more thrown from A Garden or Defender Side Spawn during a retake, blocking A Rafters or the A Tree corner while your team crosses. Paranoia is your best defensive tool on this map and it's a stall, not a duel opener. Standing safe in A Site behind the wall, fire it through into A Main as you hear the execute start: a nearsighted, deafened entry pack cannot clear A Window or trade properly, and you haven't exposed yourself to do it. Shrouded Step is your re-peek: hold an off-angle near A Tree, take one duel, step back to A Site cover before the trade arrives. And on defense specifically, resist stepping forward into A Main to hunt a pick — an isolated first death there hands the site for free and takes your smokes off the map for the whole round.

Minimap1234

A defense: one delay smoke deep in A Main, Paranoia through the wall from A Site, second orb saved for the retake from A Garden.

  • 1Delay smoke — spend this one
  • 2Fire Paranoia through the wall from cover here
  • 3Retake staging — throw the saved orb from here
  • 4Off-angle re-peek, Shrouded Step back to cover

Post-plant crossfires and From the Shadows

On A, a default plant near the A Site boxes should have you in A Rafters or A Garden, never stacked with your teammates behind the same box. Retakers come from Mid Link and A Rafters; if your team dies to the same A Rafters angle three rounds in a row, that is a setup problem — two players are holding the identical sightline — not an aim problem. The fix is one player deep toward A Tree, one on A Main, and you elevated or behind, so a retaker clearing one angle exposes his back to another. This is where the banked Dark Cover pays: throw it onto the retake path mid-defuse (A Rafters, or Mid Link if that's where they're stacking), because a smoke during defuse forces them to enter blind on a timer they can't extend. From the Shadows should be used before the fight, not as an escape. On attack, ult behind a defense that committed to A Main — landing near Mid Top or A Rafters — while your team fakes at B Main. Pick a landing spot with cover: the shade is shootable and cancels your teleport, so appearing in the open middle of B Site just donates the ultimate. On defense, the strongest use is a late flank into Mid Market or toward Attacker Side Spawn to catch rotators between sites.

Minimap1234

A post-plant: split holds forcing crossfires on both retake paths, with the saved smoke thrown mid-defuse.

  • 1Saved Dark Cover, thrown during the defuse
  • 2Deep hold — crossfire partner
  • 3Second crossfire angle, not stacked with the first
  • 4Primary retake lane — never leave it uncovered

Buys, and the four mistakes that cost Omens rounds on Ascent

Dark Cover costs nothing and recharges, which changes your economy math: on round 2 after a lost pistol, or any true eco, you still bring full smoke coverage to a save round. That makes the full team save genuinely playable — smoke A Main or Mid Top, take one trade fight for a rifle, and don't half-buy into a rifle-armor team just because you personally can afford Paranoia. A force that dies without taking rifles turns one eco into two. Conversely, on the round-2 or round-14 bonus after winning a pistol, buy fully and take the fight — the enemy is on Sheriffs and you have both orbs plus a blind. The four recurring mistakes: (1) throwing both smokes at 1:20 on defense and retaking A Site with nothing; (2) walking your own entry into your own Paranoia because you fired it late from inside A Main; (3) expecting the old placement one-ways — smokes settle to ground height now, so any one-way you get comes from real terrain elevation and must be re-tested each patch; (4) lurking Mid Market on attack and forgetting your team's execute needs A Rafters smoked at that exact second. Global smokes only help if you're listening to the count.
